How to schedule a WhatsApp message in Singapore: phone, WhatsApp Business and an AI agent

WhatsApp has no send-later button for ordinary chats yet: on 16 October 2026 its help centre described events and scheduled calls, not scheduled messages, and a native scheduler was only in limited Android beta testing. Today you can schedule a WhatsApp message with an iPhone Shortcuts automation or an Android scheduler app, and a Singapore business can schedule customer messages on the WhatsApp Business Platform, where anything sent more than 24 hours after the customer last wrote must be an approved template.

In this guide

Can you schedule messages on WhatsApp?

Not in the released app, as of 16 October 2026. WhatsApp has three nearby features, and none of them sends a message you wrote at a time you chose:

  • Events. In a one-to-one or group chat, tap the plus icon and choose Event to set a name, date and time; invitees answer Going, Maybe or Not going (WhatsApp Help Center).
  • Scheduled calls from the Calls tab, with people or groups invited in advance (WhatsApp blog).
  • Away messages in the WhatsApp Business app, an automatic reply sent always, on a custom schedule or outside business hours (WhatsApp Help Center). That is an auto-reply, covered in our WhatsApp auto-reply guide.

A real scheduler may be coming. In mid-October 2026 the beta-tracking site WABetaInfo reported that some testers on WhatsApp beta for Android 2.26.40.7 can hold the send button to schedule a message 10 minutes to two weeks ahead. WhatsApp has not announced it, so treat it as a test that may change before release.

How to schedule a WhatsApp message on iPhone

Use a personal automation in Apple's Shortcuts app, which runs WhatsApp's send action at a time you set (Apple's Shortcuts guide).

  1. Open Shortcuts, go to Automation and create a new personal automation.
  2. Choose Time of Day, set the time and how it repeats.
  3. Add WhatsApp's Send Message action with the contact and the text.
  4. Set it to run without asking; otherwise the iPhone waits for you to tap a notification.
  5. Test it with the play button. For a one-off message, switch the automation off after it fires.

The phone has to be on and online at that minute, and on some iOS and WhatsApp versions the action opens the chat and waits for you to tap Send, so test it on your own number first. Apple's Send Later is for the Messages app and does not schedule WhatsApp.

How to schedule a WhatsApp message on Android

Android has no built-in way, so people use scheduler apps from Google Play, which use Android's accessibility permission to open WhatsApp and press Send for you.

  1. Install a scheduler app with a recent update history and check the permissions it asks for.
  2. Turn on its accessibility service when prompted.
  3. Write the message, pick the contact or group, and set the time.
  4. Decide whether it asks before sending. Sending unattended usually needs the screen awake and not locked, and some apps ask you to remove the screen lock.
  5. Exclude the app from battery optimisation, or Android may stop it.

Keep this to personal use. An app with accessibility access can read your screen, chats included. WhatsApp does not support third-party apps because it cannot check their security (About unsupported apps), and its messaging guidelines list bulk messaging and auto-messaging used to harm WhatsApp or its users as adversarial behaviour. Never use a modified WhatsApp to get scheduling: accounts on unofficial versions are temporarily banned, and the ban can become permanent (WhatsApp Help Center).

How to schedule WhatsApp messages as a business

The free WhatsApp Business app has greeting messages, away messages and quick replies, but no send-later. The WhatsApp Business Platform (the WhatsApp Business API) has no phone in the loop: a system sends each message through Meta's servers, so the scheduling lives in whatever does the sending, whether a provider's campaign tool, your own software or an AI agent's scheduled job.

  1. Put a number on the Platform, directly with your own Meta app (the Cloud API) or through a provider such as Twilio.
  2. Collect opt-in. WhatsApp's policy requires that people agreed to hear from your business.
  3. Create a template and submit it. Utility is for updates about something the customer asked for, such as an order or appointment; marketing is for promotions. WhatsApp usually reviews a template within 24 hours.
  4. Schedule the send, with the placeholders (name, time, order number) filled per customer.
  5. Check delivery reports for what was delivered, read or failed, and why.

What is WhatsApp's 24-hour rule?

On the Business Platform, a business can send ordinary messages (text, images, documents) only within 24 hours of the customer's last message; after that, only a template WhatsApp approved in advance is delivered. Meta calls this the customer service window, and every message the customer sends opens or resets it. It applies to every business connection, whichever provider carries it, but not to the WhatsApp or WhatsApp Business apps.

An example. Mrs Tan messages a Tampines aircon-servicing company at 3pm on Monday. Its system has a follow-up scheduled for 7pm on Tuesday.

WhenWhat happensWindowWhat is delivered
Mon 3:00pmMrs Tan asks about Saturday slotsOpens, until Tue 3:00pmAnything: replies, a PDF price list, photos
Tue 3:00pmNo reply from her since MondayClosesApproved templates only
Tue 7:00pmThe follow-up goes out as free textClosedNothing
Tue 7:00pmThe follow-up goes out as an approved templateClosedDelivered, and charged as a template
Tue 7:20pmShe replies "Saturday 10am ok"Opens until Wed 7:20pmOrdinary replies again

Free text sent outside the window is simply not delivered. A file on its own, such as a PDF quotation, cannot go out after the window closes either; a template carries a file only if it was built with a document or image header. Template costs are in our WhatsApp Business API pricing guide for Singapore.

Which way to schedule a WhatsApp message should you use?

A phone automation is fine for a friend. For customers, use the Business Platform: it does not depend on a phone being on and awake.

Worked example: appointment reminders the evening before

What we would build for a Singapore clinic, salon or servicing company whose customers book on WhatsApp: a 7pm reminder the evening before each appointment, sent as an approved utility template, one run per customer, with a person approving the first run.

7pm Singapore time: the job startsThe agent reads tomorrow's bookingsIt fills the reminder template per customerFirst run: each send waits for approvalReminders go outReplies are answered in a fresh 24-hour window

The template

Create it once in the utility category and keep offers out of it: Meta's categorisation guidelines class an update with a promotion attached as marketing, which costs several times more. For example, with reply buttons Confirm and Reschedule:

Hi {{1}}, this is a reminder of your appointment at {{2}} tomorrow at {{3}}. Tap Confirm to keep your slot, or Reschedule and we will message you.

The job

One job, daily at 7pm Singapore time: send the appointment_reminder template to each customer booked for tomorrow, with their name, branch and time. Name the template in the job, because most customers last wrote days ago and free text would not arrive. With multi-user mode on, the job can run once per customer, each run seeing only that customer's history. Fan-out reaches customers who have already talked to the agent; for bookings made by phone or web form, one job that reads tomorrow's list from the booking system does the same work.

The first run, with a person in the loop

Put the reminder agent on the Supervised security profile for the first week, so every template send waits in the Approvals list. An approval waits five minutes by default before it counts as rejected, so run it when someone is watching. Check a handful of reminders (right name, branch and day), then decide whether to keep reviewing every send.

When a customer taps Reschedule, a new window opens and the agent can reply in plain text and offer another slot. At Singapore's utility rate, 1,200 reminders a month cost about US$19 in Meta charges (see the pricing guide). The booking side is covered in our AI booking assistant.

Common mistakes when scheduling WhatsApp messages

  • Free text to a customer who wrote two days ago. It will not arrive; use a template.
  • An offer inside a reminder. It turns a utility template into marketing, and WhatsApp can recategorise a template it already approved.
  • Skipping consent. WhatsApp requires opt-in. For marketing to Singapore numbers, the PDPA's Do Not Call provisions cover voice calls, text messages and faxes sent to Singapore telephone numbers, with a DNC Registry check within 21 days before sending unless you hold valid consent. Check the PDPC's DNC guidance for how it applies to your messages, and our PDPA and AI agents guide.
  • Ignoring the daily limit. A new business portfolio can message 250 unique people outside the window in any 24 hours until it scales up, for example by verifying the business (Meta: messaging limits).
  • The wrong time zone. Set schedules in Singapore time.

How Olano helps

Olano is a Singapore AI studio, and scheduled WhatsApp work is a common first deployment. The agents we build run on the Olano platform:

  • Three WhatsApp connectors: QR pairing, like WhatsApp Web, for your own number and small-scale use (it can start a conversation any time and works in groups), and the Twilio Business API and Meta Cloud API connectors for customer-facing traffic.
  • Scheduled jobs. A job is a message sent to the agent at a time you choose, recurring or one-time, and each job can run on its own model. With multi-user mode on, a job can run once per customer.
  • The window, enforced. On both business connectors the agent refuses an ordinary send outside the window and says so rather than reporting success, then sends an approved template.
  • Templates under control. Template creation and deletion are administrator tools for the one agent that manages the account; a customer cannot make the agent send a template.
  • Approvals on record. Under the Supervised profile every template send waits for a person, and every decision goes into an approval history.

WhatsApp's rules still apply: templates need Meta's approval, attachments cannot go out after the window closes, the business connectors are one-to-one only, and Meta's per-message charges apply. We scope each engagement in a fixed proposal; see our services and WhatsApp AI customer service.

FAQ

Can you schedule messages on WhatsApp?

Not in the released app, as of 16 October 2026. WhatsApp has events, scheduled calls and away messages, but no send-later for ordinary chats; a native scheduler has been reported in limited Android beta testing. For now, use iPhone Shortcuts, an Android scheduler app or, for a business, the WhatsApp Business Platform.

Can you automate sending WhatsApp messages?

Yes, on the WhatsApp Business Platform, where a system or AI agent sends each message through Meta's servers with a delivery report. Messages more than 24 hours after the customer last wrote must be approved templates, and people must have opted in. Automating a personal account with unofficial apps risks a ban.

How do I schedule a message on WhatsApp on iPhone?

In the Shortcuts app, create a personal automation with the Time of Day trigger, add WhatsApp's Send Message action and set it to run without asking. Test it first, because on some versions it opens the chat and waits for you to tap Send.

How do I set a message reminder in WhatsApp?

For a date involving other people, create an event in the chat. WhatsApp has been reported testing a Remind me option on individual messages since 2025, but we found no help-centre article for it on 16 October 2026, so long-press a message to see whether your app has it. Otherwise, use your phone's reminders app.

Why did my scheduled WhatsApp Business message not send?

Usually because it was free text sent more than 24 hours after the customer's last message, when only approved templates are delivered. Other causes: a template not approved or paused, a recipient who has not opted in, a new business's daily limit, or a phone-based scheduler that was locked.

Can a Singapore business send scheduled marketing messages on WhatsApp?

Yes, as approved marketing templates to people who opted in, each one charged. Marketing to Singapore telephone numbers also brings in the PDPA's Do Not Call provisions, so check the PDPC's DNC guidance first.
