How do you calculate working days in Singapore?

Count the calendar days in the range, take out the days your business does not work (Saturdays and Sundays on a Monday to Friday week), then take out the public holidays that land on a remaining working day, including the Monday after a holiday that falls on a Sunday. Decide first whether the start and end dates count: the calculator includes both unless you untick them.

  1. Fix the range. "1 to 5 March" is five days with both ends included, three strictly between them.
  2. Take out non-working days for your work week.
  3. Take out public holidays on working days, from the Ministry of Manpower's (MOM) list.
  4. Take out your own days off, such as a year-end shutdown.

Worked example. From Monday 2 November to Thursday 31 December 2026, both included, there are 60 calendar days. Sixteen are Saturdays or Sundays, which leaves 44 weekdays. Two public holidays fall on them: Monday 9 November (Deepavali is on Sunday 8 November, so the Monday is the holiday) and Friday 25 December. That gives 42 working days, or 38 with a shutdown from 28 to 31 December entered under extra days off.

In Excel, =NETWORKDAYS(start, end, holidays) gives the same count when you list the holiday dates in a range; Microsoft's own example counts both ends.

How many working days are there in 2026 and 2027?

On a Monday to Friday week, Singapore has 251 working days in 2026 and 253 in 2027 once public holidays are taken out. On a Monday to Saturday week both years have 302. Each year has 261 weekdays; the difference is how many holidays land on them (ten in 2026, eight in 2027).

Working days below leave out public holidays, which is what a deadline or a service level needs. Payroll days are MOM's "total number of working days in the month" for salary for an incomplete month, which keeps public holidays in. MOM publishes that count for 2025 and 2026 with its incomplete-month calculator; our 2026 figures match it, and 2027 applies the same rule.

MOM's formula is the monthly gross rate of pay ÷ payroll days in the month × days actually worked (public holidays and paid leave count as worked). Someone on S$4,000 a month and a Monday to Friday week who joins on Monday 16 November 2026 works 11 of November's 21 payroll days: S$4,000 ÷ 21 × 11 = S$2,095.24. MOM counts a 5.5-day week's Saturday as half a day; this calculator counts whole days only.

Singapore public holidays 2026

Singapore has 11 gazetted public holidays in 2026. Three fall on a Sunday (Vesak Day, National Day and Deepavali), so Monday 1 June, Monday 10 August and Monday 9 November are public holidays too, and Hari Raya Puasa falls on Saturday 21 March. On a Monday to Friday week that makes six long weekends.

Singapore public holidays 2027 and long weekends

MOM's 2027 list, announced on 18 June 2026, also has 11 public holidays. Chinese New Year falls on Saturday 6 and Sunday 7 February, so Monday 8 February is a public holiday, and Labour Day (1 May) and Christmas Day (25 December) fall on a Saturday. On a Monday to Friday week there are five long weekends.

The best stretch of 2027 is in May: with Hari Raya Haji on Monday 17 May and Vesak Day on Thursday 20 May, three days of leave (18, 19 and 21 May) give nine days off, Saturday 15 to Sunday 23 May.

What happens when a public holiday falls on a Sunday or a Saturday?

When a public holiday falls on a Sunday, the next day that is not already a public holiday becomes a public holiday (Holidays Act 1998, section 4(2)). When it falls on a Saturday there is no replacement public holiday, but an employee covered by the Employment Act who does not work Saturdays gets another day off or an extra day's salary instead.

Section 88 of the Employment Act sets the employee's side, as MOM explains under public holiday entitlement and pay:

  • Holiday on a rest day: the working day after the rest day is a paid holiday. The rest day is usually Sunday, hence the Monday; if yours is another day, enter your paid holiday under extra days off.
  • Holiday on a non-working day: on a five-day week Saturday is the non-working day, so a Saturday holiday earns a day off in substitution or one extra day's salary at the gross rate, at the employer's choice. 2026 has one (Hari Raya Puasa); 2027 has three (the first day of Chinese New Year, Labour Day and Christmas Day).
  • Working on a public holiday: an extra day's salary at the basic rate on top of the day's gross pay, unless the holiday is swapped for another working day by agreement.

Employees outside the Employment Act follow their contract. This is general information, not legal advice; MOM is authoritative.

How long is "3 to 5 business days" in practice?

Three to five business days means three to five weekdays after the day the clock starts, not counting weekends or public holidays: an order placed on a Monday usually arrives between Thursday and the following Monday. Each public holiday in between adds a day.

  • 5 business days from today is the same weekday next week, one day later per public holiday: from Wednesday 4 November 2026 it is Thursday 12 November, because Monday 9 November is a holiday.
  • 2 to 3 business days from a Friday is Tuesday or Wednesday.
  • 3 to 7 business days from a Monday runs from Thursday to the next Wednesday.

Day 0 is usually the day an order is received, and many sellers start counting the next business day after a cut-off time, so check their terms.

Common mistakes

  • Not deciding whether the start date counts. Inclusive and exclusive counts differ by one or two days.
  • Forgetting the observed Monday. Taking out Deepavali on Sunday 8 November 2026 changes nothing on a Monday to Friday week; the day that matters is Monday 9 November.
  • Using another country's calendar, or none. Several Singapore holidays follow lunar calendars, so their dates move every year.
  • Mixing up working days and payroll days. MOM's incomplete-month formula keeps public holidays in the count; a deadline count takes them out.
  • Treating the list as final. The President can declare extra public holidays by notice in the Gazette (Holidays Act, section 5), as with Polling Day on 3 May 2025. Check MOM's public holidays page for anything added after 17 October 2026.

How Olano helps

Olano is a Singapore AI studio. We build AI agents that send reminders and follow-ups for Singapore businesses on WhatsApp, Telegram, email and the other channels the platform supports. Agents run on a schedule you set, in the time zone you choose, so "weekdays at 9am Singapore time" is an ordinary job, and anything that goes out to a customer can wait for a person to approve it.

A schedule does not know Singapore's public holidays by itself, so where a reminder must skip them, the job's instructions have to say so, and we scope that with you. See our services, the AI inbox assistant that chases follow-ups, and our guide to scheduling WhatsApp messages.

FAQ

How do you calculate business days?

Count the days between the two dates, take out Saturdays and Sundays, then take out public holidays that fall on a weekday, including the Monday after a Sunday holiday. This calculator counts both the start and end dates unless you untick them.

How long is 5 business days from today?

From a weekday, it is the same weekday of the following week, plus one day for each public holiday in between. From a Saturday or Sunday it is the Friday after.

How long is 3 to 7 business days?

From a Monday, 3 business days is Thursday and 7 business days is the Wednesday of the following week, so 3 to 7 business days is roughly half a week to a week and a half. Each public holiday in between adds a day.

Is 2 business days 48 hours?

Not always. Two business days from a Monday is Wednesday, about 48 hours, but two business days from a Friday is Tuesday, four calendar days later, because the weekend does not count.

If a public holiday falls on a Sunday in Singapore, is Monday a holiday?

Yes. Under the Holidays Act the next day that is not already a public holiday becomes one, so Monday 1 June, 10 August and 9 November 2026 and Monday 8 February 2027 are public holidays. A Saturday holiday has no replacement, but Employment Act employees who do not work Saturdays get another day off or an extra day's pay.

How many working days are there in 2027 in Singapore?

253 on a Monday to Friday week and 302 on a Monday to Saturday week, after taking out public holidays on working days. 2027 has 261 weekdays, and eight public holidays land on them.
